Video 2 Textual Analysis.
The video starts with a montage of fast-paced shots, firstly of the lead singer in a car, showing only him in the driving seat and not the other half of the car to make the other passenger being heard speaking over this a mystery. There is then quick cuts, a medium close up of a car driving up a road, followed by a downwards tilt of a road sign, followed by a flash of a female role, smiling, with a final flash of a field or a place with grass. The music is instantly overlaying from the start, with the female voice at the same time saying repeatedly 'what would I do without you?' This is done in this way with the images of her and the scenery to show the male singer is thinking about her, and suggests he is travelling somewhere that reminds him of her or somewhere they have been together. This shows the ideology in this video is the two central characters from the start, letting the audience know instantly that the genre they are watching is love.
The next few shots as the music builds, shows shots of the male driving up and getting out of his car onto a bridge where he is watching a boat drive away, followed by quick shots of hands caressing bodies, to imply his thoughts are still of this female, and that they were intimate with each other. Slow motion shots of her in close ups are also shown, to make her look beautiful and graceful as she moves, again another implication that this is how he sees her. There is then a slow moving camera moving into a close up of the male as the music slows before the verse, revealing him looking down at a picture he is holding. The use of slower music at this point shows a gentler, more vulnerable side of the male and the video itself, as it starts with a chaotic montage of memories, showing emotion and different feelings from this, to a very simple, detatched scene of him looking very alone, a black background behind him to rehiterate this. This camera moves in to show his expression as he sings, before more slow motion shots of the female in a different scene, similar to the field we saw at the start, and then back to an intimate scene of them together, showing parts of their bodies making contact. The shots then move back and forth from these different scenes again, showing he is always thinking about her through every line he is singing. There are then more scenes of him in different rooms of an empty looking house, which was perhaps theirs they shared, with pans around him as he sings to show more emotion and expression, aswell as going into shots of them intimate together again, a blurrier effect on the camera in this cut is used to show it is a past experience. Another obvious feature of the video used to display the ideology of them and her being important to him, is that he is shown in black and white in the future as he sings, whereas his past memories are shown in colour, to stress that he has a very dull, colourless life without her. Montage shots fitted in between these scenes are also used, showing the band playing, for promotion of the band. This shows that although there is a definete narrative throughout of love and memories, the band also get a chance to promote their music and their image as a whole. The shots of them are also shown in black and white, giving a more professional look. On whole, the video is structured in a similar way throughout, with more black and white scenes of the male singer walking through the docks we saw at the start and up a street, again giving more promotion to the band. There is no clear order or structure of the narrative, although it is made obvious from the shots of the past and present that it evolves around the theme of love lost between a couple, and that one central character is reliving the experience as he sings through the song. The music is structured in a way that the verse is gentler in composition, using accoustic guitar sounds without the drums, therefore the scenes used follow this pattern, having more delicate scenes of the pair together or splitting up in these sections, followed by band promo scenes and the lead singer for the bigger composition in the chorus. There are a lot of slow motion and close up edits used, aswell as slow pans around the male character, to show in depth emotions and expressions, followed by fast paced edits when he is thinking of a lot of memories at one time, suggesting they are building up emotionally in his head. Fast paced edits are also used for the band promo parts of the video, shown through low angle shots for dominance of the band.
The Script-Breakeven Lyrics
I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing
This line shows the central male character on his own with a black background, to show he is isolated and alone, also relating to the lyrics, which are saying although he is alive, he does not have much left.
Just prayin' to a god that I don't believe in
This line shows the female he is thinking about in a colourful field with slow motion shots. As this is such a bright scene with her being the central character, also shown with a low angle shot, but not showing her face, it gives irony to the lyrics, as though she is like a god, or a powerful being to him.
Cos I got time while she got freedom
This shows again the black background with the male singing the line to tell the story, with a shot of the female isolated in a field, again making the lyrics literal as though she is alone and free from him.
Cos when a heart breaks no it don't break even
The shots are the same, this time the female being shown on a mobile which the male is holding in a point of view shot, to suggest she was the one that broke his heart.
Her best days will be some of my worst
This cuts from the female looking happy on the phone, as though she is happier without him, back to him in the black and white scene singing as he looks down on this image of her, implying he is lonely and unhappy that she happy.
She finally met a man that's gonna put her first
This shows both characters together as he records her on his phone, to a slow motion close up of her face smiling. Because she is the central character in the scene, it shows she is the most important one in it, and that is how he sees her.
While I'm wide awake she's no trouble sleeping
This is again shown with the male character in black and white, sat on the edge of his bed for a literal meaning of him not being able to sleep.
Cos when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven... even... no
This shows a flashback of them laid on a bed together, suggesting that was the time before she broke his heart.
What am I supposed to do when the best part of me was always you,
This shows the band playing and the male singing for promotion, leading on from the memory in the previous scene to tell the story of how he is feeling.
And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up that you're ok
This is a close up of the males face, showing emotion to express that he is in a bad state emotionally since they split up.
I'm falling to pieces, yeah,
I'm falling to pieces
Both of these lines are close ups of the singer to express his emotion, as they are important lines in the song, expressed by the build in sound of the song, with drums, electric guitar, louder and higher vocals, and keyboard all used.
They say bad things happen for a reason
This shows the female walking out of their house as though she is leaving him, making it a literal play on words.
But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding
This shows the male watching her leave, going into a close up of his face to show he is hurting inside. It is also ironic as he is in so much pain yet in a colourful scene with her as she leaves.
Cos she's moved on while I'm still grieving
This is shown in a blurry close up of the male, to show things aren't clear in his mind and emotions, as though he is grieving for someone.
And when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven even... no
This line is dedicated to fast paced shots of the band playing for promotion and to tell the story through them.
What am I gonna to do when the best part of me was always you,
This line contains more promotion of the band in a black and white shot.
And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up that you're ok
In this scene, there is a shot of the two in a car, firstly showing the female smiling, and then back to a medium close up of the male looking sad, to show the contrast in emotions and to relate to the lyrics.
I'm falling to pieces, yeah,
This line shows band promotion and close ups of the male singer from a high angle shot to show vulnerablility in his emotions.
I'm falling to pieces, yeah,
This line shows more band promotion and a side view of a close up of the male singer to show more emotion.
I'm falling to pieces
(One still in love while the other ones leaving)
This shot shows a slow motion shot of the female in colour, again to show he is thinking about her as he sings this line, and that she is the one making him this way. The underline sang by the rest of the band is also done as this scene plays.
I'm falling to pieces
(Cos when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven)
While these lines are sung, there is a shot of a band member singing down a microphone in black and white, before moving away to leave only the mic in view. This is more promotional material of the band as the music becomes slower, to emphasise the emotion of the line again.
Oh you got his heart and my heart and none of the pain
In this scene, there is a high angle shot of the singer with the band as he sings, to show he is vulnerable and full of pain.
You took your suitcase, I took the blame.
This line shows the couple together in colour walking up the docks where he first went in the video, to show memories of them together again.
Now I'm try'na make sense of what little remains ooh
This shot shows the couple in this scene again, however the camera slowly moves out to show they are seperating hands to show there is nothing left between them.
Cos you left me with no love and no love to my name.
This shows more band promotion and a close up of the singer to show his emotion and facial expression.
I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing
This shot shows a black and white view of the male again as the music gets gentler and breaks down in composition, as he walks away from his car at the docks. It is again a medium close up to show his body and hand jestures, and facial expression for emotion.
Just prayin' to a god that I don't believe in
This shot shows him again walking away from his car, continuing from the last, a hand held camera following him to show realism to the video, and to lose the professional look, to make the audience believei it is really happening.
Cos I got time while she got freedom
Cos when a heart breaks no it don't break
No it don't break
No it don't break even no
These lines are all in the same shot of the male looking down at his phone before closing it, to remind us of the start of the video where he was looking on it at a video of his girlfriend, making the camera an icon to represent his girlfriend.
What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you and
This shows the male singer moving backwards away from the microphone in slow motion, walking away from the audience infront who is watching the concert, as though he is walking away from everything literally to show he is having to leave his relationship behind, also followed by a quick shot of one of the starting scenes of the couple laid together on a bed, showing this time his hands are moving away from her as though they are growing further apart.
What am I suppose to say when I'm all choked up that you're ok
(Oh glad your okay now)
This is antoher close up of the male in a black background, showing a contrast in what he is singing, as she is okay but he is not, as he is sad and alone.
I'm falling to pieces yeah
(Oh, I'm glad youre okay now)
This shot shows the male moving in slow motion away from a bright line on stage, as though the female is the light in his life and he is moving away from it.
I'm falling to pieces yeah
(One still in love while the other ones leaving)
This shot shows a slow motion shot again of the female as he sings this, as though she is the reason he is falling apart, followed by another high angle shot of him again to show his vulnerability in these words.
I'm falling to pieces
(Cos when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven)
This shows the male in his room alone, grabbing and pulling his curtains as he sings, again to show within his body language that he is literally holding on to everything he has left, showing he is not coping alone.
Oh it don't break even no
This is more quick shots of the male walking alone, again in black and white, emphasising his emotions and the lyrics once more.
Oh it don't break even no
This shows him in his house again, crying as he sings, emphasising his emotions as the video comes to and end, with a shot of him walking up the docks with a black coat on, again to emphasise his isolation and loneliness.
Oh it don't break even no
This follows the pace of the music, showing firstly the female looking back from inside a car as though she can hear what he is singing to her, followed by a medium close up of him looking back at her, making a connection between them in the present for the first time, and by doing this, closure on the past, with a possibility that the story is not ended, and that something could happen between them in the future.
